Car accident and the other party has left the scene- what to do.

August 9, 2024

SAFETY FIRST....Experiencing a car accident can be a situation filled with stress. Should you ever be involved in one, your initial priority should be ensuring the well-being of all individuals involved and contacting emergency services at 000 if necessary, including the police, ambulance, or fire department.

Collect the other parties information

Remembering to gather the other party's information after a car accident is crucial. This information can assist the police in their investigation, support your car insurance claim, or facilitate a claim with the compulsory third-party (CTP) insurer of the responsible vehicle.

  • Some major details that should be collected

    The other driver’s name

    • The other driver’s address
    • The other driver’s phone number
    • The other vehicle’s registration details (it’s always a good idea to take a photo of the other vehicle’s licence plate)
    • The make and model of the other vehicle
    • The date and time of the accident
    • The location of the accident.

What if the other party has left or refuses to provide their details?

When a road accident occurs, it is necessary to share relevant contact and insurance information as mandated by law. In cases where the other vehicle involved leaves the scene without providing details or refuses to do so, the incident is classified as involving an ‘unidentified vehicle’. It is crucial to make efforts to identify the other party, especially if you have sustained injuries. It is advisable to inform the police and provide them with comprehensive information to aid in the identification process.

Details such as:

  • The car make and model
  • The colour of the car
  • Other revealing traits such as noticeable modifications.
